Chairperson, Octavia Waight Centre

Welcome to our website!

As the Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Octavia Waight Centre - a home for the elderly, we welcome you to visit this site and to become informed of the work we are doing under the umbrella organization of HelpAge Belize, and we ask for your kind assistance where possible.
The home currently serves 25 senior citizens with shelter, food, accompaniment and love. Our 7 Care Attendants and Supervisor make sure that all our residents are kept in optimum health and active as much as possible.

Our Therapy Unit was established to assist elderly persons, victims of stroke, accidents etc… with physical therapy. Volunteer, Dorothy Roth, SRN, is responsible for the management of the Therapy Unit which also provides home visitations for elderly persons in need of this service.
Community members of the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena and surrounding villages, continuously visit the home to cheer up our residents, fellowship with them and to renew acquaintances, for which we are grateful. In likewise manner, if you are visiting our area, we ask you to drop in and see what we are doing. Welcome to our website!

Elias A. Awe
Chairman, Helpage Belize

The Octavia Waight Centre is a child of Helpage Belize. The centre was named in honour of one of our first mid-wives/nurse, Octavia Waight Robateaux, at a time when we had no resident doctor or nurse in our community.
The Centre was officially opened on the 5th of September 1986 by the Hon. Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson, Minister of Social Services.
This website, therefore, is being launched to commemorate our 22nd year of providing quality service to elderly persons in Belize.
We trust that through this medium, we will keep you informed on elderly care in Belize and be able to reach old friends and friends-to-be within and beyond our borders. We would be happy to hear from you after browsing our website.

Do enjoy.

Sister Elsa Oliva,
Patroness of Helpage Belize

It is with much pride and satisfaction that I welcome the launching of this website by the Board of Governors of the Octavia Waight Centre in San Ignacio, Cayo. We trust that this medium will be a wonderful tool to keep our friends and readers abreast of the work being carried out at the home in the care of our older persons.
The Octavia Waight Centre falls under the aegis of HelpAge Belize.
Our organization is a national movement within a global network to achieve lasting improvement in the physical, emotional, psycho-social and spiritual lives of older persons. As our mission states: "HelpAge Belize will empower older persons by providing services and an enabling environment to achieve ageing with dignity."
To carry out our mission, therefore, we count on the generous assistance of our friends from at home and abroad and we ask you to continue assisting us so that we can help our older persons in Belize.

God bless!
