HELPAGE BELIZE HOLDS ITS 26th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Helpage Belize held its 26th AGM over the weekend where several resolutions and announcements were made. Reports from district representatives were also presented.
Guest Speaker for the occasion was Mrs. Lily Bowman, Director General of the Belize Red Cross organization who spoke on issues of disaster preparedness and the elderly.
Chairman of HelpAge Belize, Elias Awe, announced that HelpAge Belize is the recipient of financial support from the Belize Natural Energy Trust (BNE) to the tune of $92,000.00 for the construction of a HelpAge Activity Centre in Benque Viejo del Carmen and the refurbishment and furnishing of the Hopkins HelpAge Centre. The Chairman expressed his gratitude to BNE on behalf of HelpAge Belize.
Resolutions & recommendations passed at the AGM included:
- The adoption of the HelpAge International name brand to serve as the organization's new logo or name brand
- A motion was made to continue to advocate for a universal pension for older persons
- to advocate for country-wide NHI coverage for all older persons sixty(60)years and over
- that Government should conduct a feasibility study to determine whether the retirement age of public officers should be increased from fifty-five(55) years to sixty(60)years.
The meeting also held elections for a new Chairman of the Board and a Secretary. Elected to serve as Chairman was Mr. Evan Dakers and Mrs. Sandra Vasquez was elected as the new Secretary of the Board.
Present at the AGM was the Patroness of HelpAge Belize, Sister Elsa Oliva and Past Chair of the Board, Mrs. Maria Elena Sylvestre.
